A licensed immigration consultant or attorney is worth the cost for complex cases — refusals, criminal records, business/investor visas, family sponsorship, or anything involving inadmissibility findings.

Portugal's D7 and Digital Nomad Visa, Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (launched 2023), Mauritius Premium Visa, the UAE Remote Work Visa and Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) are among the most accessible for income-qualified remote workers. Most require €1,500–€3,000+ per month of stable foreign income and private health insurance.

Processing time varies hugely by country and category: 2–4 weeks for a UAE Employment Visa, 3–8 weeks for the UK Skilled Worker visa, 6–18 months for Canadian Express Entry or Australian skilled migration, and 3–18 months for US categories like H-1B (which is lottery-based). Premium or priority processing is offered in several countries for an extra fee.

Most work visas allow dependants — spouse and minor children — but the right to work depends on the country. Canada's Open Work Permit for spouses, UAE family residence visas, the UK dependant visa, and France's Talent Passport all let partners work. The US H-4 EAD has stricter eligibility, and several Gulf countries require separate sponsorship.

Plan on a valid passport (6+ months remaining), apostilled birth/marriage certificates, police clearance from every country lived in for 6+ months, full medical exam where required, qualifications assessment (e.g. WES for Canada), proof of funds, and a tailored CV. Translations into the destination language must usually be certified.

Most residence permits require minimum physical presence (often 183+ days per year), tax registration, valid health cover, and timely renewal applications before the expiry date. Long absences, missed renewals, or working outside the visa category are the most common reasons people lose status, so set calendar reminders 60–90 days before any expiry.
