Moving to Spain

EU citizens can move freely and register on the Padrón Municipal without a visa. Non-EU nationals typically apply for the Non-Lucrative Visa or the Digital Nomad Visa (introduced in 2023). Apply for your NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) as soon as possible — it's required for nearly all official transactions including opening a bank account.

• Sea freight from the UK takes 4–8 days; from North America 12–18 days; from the UAE 14–20 days.
• EU movers face no customs for goods moving within the EU — road or sea freight is seamless.
• Non-EU movers can claim a customs exemption (Franquicia Aduanera) for personal effects owned 6+ months.
• Spain's port infrastructure is excellent — Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras are major entry points.
• Road freight is common for moves from Northern Europe — often faster and cheaper than sea for smaller volumes.

• Passport and valid Spanish visa or EU registration certificate.

• Modelo 01 — Customs declaration form for personal effects (non-EU imports).
• Proof of prior residence outside Spain for 12+ months (utility bills, rental contract).

Spain's AEAT (Tax Agency) and Aduanas handle customs. Non-EU personal effects meeting the residency transfer criteria (12 months abroad, establishing primary residence in Spain) are exempt from IVA and customs duties. Prohibited items include: certain firearms, counterfeit goods, and products from protected species.
