The UAE's onboarding is sponsor-led: your employer or free-zone company typically initiates your residency visa, medical fitness test and Emirates ID in a defined sequence. Your job in the first 30 days is to keep the chain moving, get health insurance in place, sort housing and a bank account, and convert your driver's licence if eligible. This guide outlines the standard sequence as administered by GDRFA (Dubai) and ICP (federal/Abu Dhabi) — confirm the latest with your sponsor.

Week one — entry permit, medical and biometrics

  • Enter on the employment entry permit issued by your sponsor.
  • Complete the medical fitness test at an approved DHA / DOH centre (blood test and chest X-ray).
  • Submit biometrics for Emirates ID at an authorised typing centre or service centre.
  • Have original passport, attested degree certificates and marriage/birth certificates available — your sponsor will guide which are needed.

Week two — residency stamping and Emirates ID

Once medical fitness clears, your residency visa is issued and stamped (or recorded electronically — UAE has moved away from passport stamps in many cases). Your Emirates ID card is then printed; until you receive the physical card, your Emirates ID number is usable for most transactions.

  • Track Emirates ID and residency status via the ICP smart services or GDRFA app.
  • Sponsor a spouse and dependants only after your own residency is finalised.
  • Children's school enrolment normally requires the parent's Emirates ID number.

Week three — banking, housing and utilities

  • Open a UAE bank account — most banks require Emirates ID, salary certificate and a tenancy contract or letter from your employer.
  • Sign a tenancy contract and register it on Ejari (Dubai) or Tawtheeq (Abu Dhabi) — required for utility connection and visa renewals.
  • Activate utilities — DEWA (Dubai), ADDC/AADC (Abu Dhabi), SEWA (Sharjah).
  • Register for du or Etisalat / e& home internet and mobile.

Week four — driver's licence, Salik and household goods

  • If your nationality is eligible, convert your foreign driver's licence at the RTA (Dubai) or relevant emirate authority — no driving test required for many countries.
  • Buy a Salik tag and link it to your number plate for Dubai's road tolls.
  • Get a Nol card for the Dubai Metro / RTA buses, or Hafilat in Abu Dhabi.
  • Arrange customs clearance for any shipped household goods via Dubai Customs (Mirsal 2) — your mover usually handles this.

How to sequence the first 30 days

For the UAE, the practical sequence below works well: newcomer registrations interlock — many require a local address, which requires a lease, which often requires a tax ID, which requires the residence permit. Mapping the dependency chain in advance avoids the classic chicken-and-egg loops that delay banking, schooling and healthcare. Build a sequenced 30-day plan before you land, not after.

  • Identify which IDs/numbers are pre-requisites for banking, leasing and schooling.
  • Book registration appointments before arrival where the country allows it.

How long does residency stamping take?

Once you have entered on the entry permit and completed the medical, residency is typically issued within a few working days for most employer-sponsored cases. Free-zone and government-sector cases vary. Your PRO will track it on your behalf.

Do I need health insurance from day one?

Health insurance is mandatory in Dubai (DHA) and Abu Dhabi (DOH) for residents and is usually arranged by your employer. Confirm your start date and whether dependants are covered, and bridge any gap with travel insurance.

Can I drive on my foreign licence?

You can drive a rental vehicle on a recognised foreign or international licence as a tourist. As a UAE resident you must convert to a UAE licence — nationals of around 50 countries can convert without testing. Confirm current eligibility with the RTA.

When can I sponsor my family?

Once your residency is finalised, you can sponsor a spouse and children if you meet the minimum salary threshold (commonly cited as AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation). Confirm current rules with GDRFA / ICP.

Where will my belongings clear customs?

Sea shipments typically clear at Jebel Ali (Dubai) or Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi); air shipments at DXB or AUH cargo terminals. Your mover will file via Mirsal 2 and arrange delivery to your home.
