DTHC — Destination Terminal Handling Charges — is one of the most misunderstood line items in international moving quotes. It is real, it is unavoidable on most ocean shipments, and it is the single most common source of 'surprise' costs at the destination port. This guide explains what DTHC is, why some movers quote it separately, and what to ask up front so the price you see is the price you pay.

What DTHC actually covers

DTHC is the cost of handling your shipment once it arrives at the destination port and before it leaves the terminal for delivery. Depending on the lane and the destination agent, it typically covers:

  • Discharging the container from the vessel.
  • Moving the container to the terminal yard.
  • Terminal handling fees charged by the destination port operator.
  • Documentation processing at the destination side (e.g. delivery order issuance).
  • For LCL shipments, container deconsolidation at a destination CFS (Container Freight Station).

Why it's often quoted separately

Origin movers often quote 'freight only' to the destination port — meaning their price covers packing, origin handling and ocean freight, but stops at the terminal at the other end. Destination port fees are then collected by the destination agent, in local currency, at local rates that the origin mover doesn't directly control.

A clean, all-in 'door-to-door' quote should include DTHC, customs clearance and final delivery to your residence. A 'port-to-port' or 'freight-only' quote usually does not. The difference can be significant.

What's NOT included in DTHC

DTHC is specifically the terminal handling component. It does not normally cover:

  • Customs clearance and any duties or taxes assessed at destination.
  • Quarantine, inspection or X-ray fees if your container is selected for examination.
  • Storage charges if you cannot accept delivery within the free-time window.
  • Demurrage and detention if the container sits beyond the allowed days.
  • Final inland transport from the port to your residence and unloading at the door.
  • Optional services like unpacking, debris removal or re-assembly.

How to avoid surprise DTHC charges

  • Always ask for a door-to-door quote in writing, with DTHC and destination clearance specifically listed.
  • Ask which charges are estimates vs fixed (port fees and currency movements can change).
  • Confirm free-time at destination — usually a number of days the container can sit at port before storage and demurrage start.
  • Request the destination agent's name and contact at booking, so you know who to call locally.
  • If a quote looks dramatically cheaper than others, check whether it includes DTHC and clearance — that's almost always the difference.

Is DTHC the same in every country?

No. DTHC is set by destination port operators and varies significantly by country, port and container type. The same shipment to two different ports can have very different DTHC line items.

Why didn't my origin mover include DTHC?

Some origin movers quote 'freight only' to the destination port, leaving DTHC to be collected by the destination agent. This isn't necessarily dishonest — but you need to ask explicitly so the totals are comparable across quotes.

Can DTHC change between quote and invoice?

Yes, slightly. Most reputable agents quote DTHC based on current published port rates and lock the figure when the shipment books, but currency movement, port surcharges and container surveys can introduce small variations. Ask which charges are fixed vs estimated.

Does LCL also have DTHC?

Yes. LCL shipments typically incur destination CFS (Container Freight Station) deconsolidation charges in addition to terminal handling. These are often quoted as 'destination charges' for LCL.

What if I get hit with surprise destination fees?

First, ask for a written breakdown of every charge, in local currency, with the port-rate reference. If charges weren't disclosed in your original quote and you booked door-to-door, raise it with your origin coordinator immediately. Honest agents will reconcile.
